Campus of Hope: Transitional Living
Safe ~ Integrated ~ Healing
Within recent years, homelessness has exploded into a worldwide crisis. The number of people who fall into this category has risen exponentially. Portland struggles with an overwhelming homeless population with over 4,000 people sleeping on the streets on any given night. Designing for homelessness is more involved than just making space. It requires creating an atmosphere of acceptance, belonging, and community. Our campus accomplishes four goals. A transitional form serves as a symbolic progression through the program to recovery. The middle street is a pedestrian cross-way to connect the public esplanade to the street. Incorporated public program allows private spaces for healing within the blocks. Adding retail and a public market fosters engagement and promotes breaking down the barrier of city vs. campus.
